Abstract

945,392. Printed flocked fabrics. ALLIED TEXTILE PRINTERS Inc. Jan. 16, 1961, No. 1761/61. Heading B2E. A printed flocked fabric comprises a base 41 composed entirely of synthetic fibres which are not stained by cellulose reactive dyes, the base having cellulosic flock 44 bonded thereto in selected areas 43, the flock having thereon a coloured design printed with a printing paste containing a reactive dye, which dye reacts chemically with the cellulose of the flock and is thus bonded therewith, the unflocked areas 42 of the base being substantially free of the reactive dye. The base may be composed of polyester fibres such as linear aromatic dicarboxylic acid polyester fibres preferably fibres of the condensation polymers of ethylene glycol and terephthalic acid, or other non- cellulose fabrics which have no affinity for the reactive dye. The base may be dyed. The flock may be of rayon or viscose. The printing paste may contain 2-7% reactive dye, 40-50% thickener such as gum, sodium alginate or a cellulose thickener, 1-2% sodium bicarbonate, and the rest water. One or multiple stage printing may be utilized to apply a pattern in one or more colours on the flocked areas. The flocking adhesive may be applied in a predetermined pattern to the fabric 11 base by applicator roll 15 having raised areas 16, the cellulosic flock 19 applied to the adhesive, the flocked base heated in oven 21 to set the flocking adhesive thus firmly bonding the flock to the base, the fabric is printed with printing paste containing a cellulose reactive dye or dyes by applicator rollers 33, to form a coloured design on the flocked areas and heating the printed flocked base in chamber 35 to set the reactive dye or dyes on the flock. The flock 19 may be applied to substantially the entire area of the base, the excess flock, including the flock applied to the areas containing no flocking adhesive, is removed from the base after heating thereof to set the flocking adhesive in chamber 23 by a blast of air or other inert gas, and the printed fabric, after the heating step to set the cellulose reactive dye or dyes on the flock, is subjected to a washing or soaping treatment in washer 36 to remove the dye on the unflocked areas. The printed fabric may be heated to a temperature of from 190 to 220 ‹F. to set the dye in the flock and thereafter the printed fabric is washed at a temperature of from 150 to 160 ‹F. to remove the dye on the unflocked areas.
