Abstract

An o -lactam containing 5 or more ring atoms is polymerized in the presence of an alkaline catalyst and in the simultaneous presence of an ester, semi-ester or mixed ester salt of carbonic acid, a halogen carbonic acid ester or a diester of pyrocarbonic acid as an activator. Specified lactams are e -caprolactam, pyrrolidone, piperidone and o -oenantholactam. Conventional alkaline catalysts are specified. Preferred activators are dimethyl, diethyl glycol, and propylene glycol carbonate, the monoethyl and monomethyl esters of carbonic acid and the sodium and potassium salts thereof, dimethyl, diethyl, diphenyl, and dibenzyl carbonate and the methyl and ethyl esters of chloroformic acid. In Examples (1) to (3), (5) and (6) e -caprolactam is polymerized in the presence of sodium methylate and: (1) diethyl carbonate; (2) glycol carbonate; (3) pyrocatechin carbonate; (5) the ethyl ester of chloroformic acid and (6) propylene glycol carbonate whilst in example (7) pyrrolidone is polymerized in the presence of sodium methylate and diethyl carbonate. Specifications 842,576, 872,328, 900,150 and 900,151 are referred to.
