Abstract

Plastic containers are moulded by extruding a tube of plastic material, intermittently cutting the tube to form parisons of required length, pinching together one end of each parison while it is being fed to one of a series of moulds mounted on a continuously moving rotary carrier, introducing into the leading end of the parison a mandrel which is pivotally mounted on the rotary carrier, introducing air through the mandrel to blow the parison into the shape of the mould and then removing the article from the mould. The blow moulding machine in Fig. 1 has a base 1 on which there is supported a horizontally pivoted vertical and continuously rotating turntable 2 carrying a series of watercooled two-part bottle moulds 3 which are successively brought to a blowing station 4. The synthetic plastic material is fed into a hopper 5 and formed into tubing by an extruder device 6. The tubing emerges through a cross-head 7 and is cut into parisons by a taut wire cutter mounted on a rotary arm 8 while being internally supported by a divergent stream of air (not shown). The parisons are gripped by nip fingers 39 and fed by conveyers 10 into the moulds as the latter are brought to the moulding station 4. A hollow calibrating mandrel 11 connected to an air pressure line 12 is then inserted into the leading end of the parison. After the article has been blown in the mould, the mould opens and the article is ejected by the continuing air pressure through the mandrel 11. Each mandrel is mounted on a pivoted arm 47 and is reciprocated into and out of its associated mould by a lost-motion linkage 51. The opening and closing of the moulds and movement of the associated mandrels are pneumatically controlled by a system including actuating valves which are cam operated when the rotary mould carrier turns.
