Abstract
944,528. Capacitors; inductors. CORNING GLASS WORKS. Jan. 18, 1962 [Jan. 23, 1961], No. 1877/62. Headings H1M and H1T. An impedance device comprises a metal shell formed with a small diameter externally tubular portion conjoined to a large diameter tubular end portion; the bore of the smaller portion being partially noncircular and traversed by a screw whose head is resiliently seated on an end surface of the larger portion; a first element comprising an axially movable hollow cylinder surrounding the smaller portion with an axial tubular shaft of noncircular external crosssection extending within the bore of the smaller portion to internally engage the threads of the screw; and a dielectric tube surrounding the hollow cylinder, attached at one end to the larger portion, and supporting externally a second element. In a capacitor (Fig. 1) a circular metal shell comprising a small diameter tubular portion 11, conjoined to a large diameter tubular portion 12 counterbored and coned at its open end and soldered to a threaded tubular panel mounting 30, is traversed by a screw 21 whose head 22 has a conical surface 23 pressed against the coned internal surface 16 by spring 26 bearing on the inside of mounting 30. An electrode cylinder 35 surrounding portion 11 has an axially extending tubular shaft 36 threaded on screw 21 and of square external cross-section to engage the squared internal bore of 11 for axial adjustment by a screw driver slot of the head 22, and is closely surrounded by dielectric cylinder 40 soldered to portion 12 and carrying an external cylindrical electrode 44 co-operating with axially movable electrode 35. A spiral winding may be formed externally on the dielectric cylinder and inductively varied by traversal of cylinder 35 therein (Fig. 4, not shown).
