Abstract

944,323. Applying screw-caps to containers. METALLURGICA MAUCERI S.p.A. March 10, 1960, No. 8462/60. Heading B8T. A machine for fixing caps on containers with screw-threaded necks comprises rotary tools 126, 128 mounted on the spinning unit T for spinning the flanges of the cap into engagement with the thread on the neck of the container. The invention is described as being applied to two types of machine, one in which the spinning unit is reciprocated vertically relative to the platform 10 supporting the containers, and another in which the containers are reciprocated vertically, but in both cases the construction of the spinning unit T is basically as shown in Fig. 4. The spinning unit comprises a tubular element 66 rotated by a motor via the pulley 50, and connected to an inner tubular member 104 by the pin-and-slot arrangement 106, 108. Thus the tubular member 104 is rotated when member 66 is rotated, but can slide axially relative thereto. The member 104 is further provided at its lower end with an annular member 102 formed with slots in which are pivoted supports 110, 112 for spinning tools 126, 128. The tool 126 is prevented from moving axially relative to its supporting spindle 122, but provision is made for allowing such movement of the tool 128 relative to its supporting spindle 124. The upper ends of supports 110, 112 are provided with rollers 118, 120. The unit T further comprises a plate 100, non-rotatably supported by a member 78 coaxial with members 66 and 104. In operating the machine, the neck of a loosely-capped container is urged upwardly through an aperture 136 in the disc 132, until the cap abuts against the plate 100. Further upward movement of the container causes relative vertical movement between the rotating members 66 and 104, until a ring 72 on the lower end of member 66 engages the rollers 118 and 120 causing supports 110 and 112 to pivot to bring the spinning tools into engagement with the flange of the cap on the container. Thus the cap edge is spun tightly round the neck of the container by the tool 126, whilst the flange of the cap is spun into tight contact with the threading of the neck by means of the axially-displaceable tool 128. As shown in Fig. 1, the spinning head T is modified to be reciprocated vertically against the action of spring 86, by a fork 58, the fork being actuated by the same motor 17 which rotates the spinning head.
