Abstract
The preparation of derivatives of ethylene glycol and polyethylene glycol is exemplified, as follows: (1) methoxy-polyethylene glycol propionitrile is prepared by reacting monomethoxypolyethelene glycol 350 with acrylonitrile in the presence of sodium methoxide; (2) the product of (1) is hydrolysed and esterified with diethylene glycol monomethyl ether to produce the methoxypolyethylene glycol 350 propionic acid ester of diethylene glycol monomethyl ether; (3) diethylene glycol monomethyl is reacted with sodium hydroxide to produce its sodium salt, which is then reacted with beta-propiolactone to produce diethylene glycol monomethyl ether propionic acid which in turn is esterified with monomethoxypolyethylene glycol 350; (4) diethylene glycol monomethyl ether is reacted with phosgene to produce its chloroformate, which is reacted with methoxy-polyethylene glycol 350 to produce diethylene glycol monomethyl ether methoxypolyethylene glycol 350 carbonate; (5) the sodium salt of methoxy-polyethylene glycol is formed, which is reacted with diethylene glycol monomethyl ether monochloroacetate to produce alpha-(methoxy-polyethylene glycol 350) diethylene glycol monomethyl ether acetate; (6) polyethylene glycol 400 is esterified with a mixture of acetic and maleic acids; (7) triphenyl phosphite is reacted with methoxy-polyethylene glycol 350 in the presence of sodium methylate and the reaction mixture is treated with sodium carbonate and hydrogen peroxide to produce a mixture of monophenyl and diphenyl monomethoxy-polyethylene glycol 350 phosphates; (8) monomethoxy-polyethylene glycol 350 is esterified with adipic acid; (9) as in (8) but using sebacic acid; (10) a mixture of diethylene glycol monomethyl ether and polyethylene glycol 300 is esterified with maleic anhydride; (11) a mixture of polyethylene glycol and tetrahydrofurfuryl alcohol is esterified with maleic anhydride; (12) a mixture of polyethylene glycol 300 and ethylene glycol monophenyl ether is esterified with oxalic acid; and (13) a mixture of ethylene glycol and diethylene glycol monomethyl ether is esterified with diglycolic acid.ALSO:A coating composition comprises an aqueous emulsion of a homopolymer or copolymer of vinyl acetate, acrylic esters or acrylonitrile, or a butadiene-styrene copolymer and, as an additive, in amount of 0.25 to 6% by weight of the polymer emulsion of (a) an asymmetric diester of a dicarboxylic acid, or (b) an asymmetric diester or diether or an ether ester or an ether nitrile of a polyalkylene glycol containing 2 to 16 alkylene groups containing 2 to 3 carbon atoms, the ester group being formed by a mono- or dicarboxylic acid containing up to 12 carbon atoms and the ether group being formed by an aliphatic or aromatic alcohol, or (c) a phosphoric acid ester of which at least one ester group is formed by said polyalkylene glycols and derivatives thereof and the other ester group or groups are alkyl, aryl or aralkyl, the additive being water-soluble or readily water-dispersible. Additives specified are methoxy-polyethylene glycol 350-propionitrile, the methoxy-polyethylene glycol 350-propionic acid, ester of diethylene glycol monomethyl ether, the monomethoxypolyethylene glycol 350 ester of diethylene glycol monomethyl ether propionic acid, diethylene glycol monomethyl ether methoxy-polyethylene glycol 350 carbonate, alpha (methoxy-polyethylene glycol 350) diethylene glycol monomethyl ether acetate, mixed acetic and maleic acid esters of polyethylene glycol 400, monophenyl bis-(methoxy-polyethylene glycol 350) phosphate, mono-methoxy-polyethylene glycol 350 adipate and sebacate, the reaction product of polyethylene glycol 300, diethylene glycol monomethyl ether and maleic acid, the reaction product of polyethylene glycol 300, tetrahydrofurfuryl alcohol and maleic anhydride, the reaction product of polyethylene glycol 300, ethylene glycol monophenyl ether and oxalic acid and the reaction product of ethylene glycol, diethylene glycol monomethyl ether and diglycolic acid. Other ingredients which may be present in the compositions are ethylene glycol, polyethylene glycol, diethylene glycol and its monoethyl ether, dibutyl phthalate, methyl cellulose, hydroxyethyl cellulose, sodium polyacrylate, titanium dioxide, clay, aluminium silicate, calcium carbonate, surfactants and preservatives.
