In a barbecue device a gas, e.g. liquefied petroleum, from a container 10 feeds a flame between an insulation plate 26 of a material which preferably incandesces, e.g. vermiculite asbestos, magnesite bonded, and a radiation plate 28, e.g. of metal or refractory material, the plate being surmounted by a grid 54. The radiation plate 28 has a moat-like trough 30 with fat escape holes 32 and there may be provided a reflecting interior cover 58, Fig. 3 (not shown).
