Abstract

944,145. Making heat exchangers; soldering. ROBERT BOSCH G.m.b.H. Aug. 10, 1962 [Aug. 12, 1961], No. 30698/62. Headings B3A and B3R. In making a heat-exchanger, two metal plates with an interposed layer of solder are arranged in a mould having recesses in at least one of its inner surfaces, the mould is heated to the melting point of the solder and is vibrated to destroy oxide films on the solder and the plates are pressed together under high pressure. An aluminium plate 1, Fig. 1, with embossed recesses 2 and a flat aluminium plate 3 are arranged with solder foil 4 between them in a mould comprising an upper recessed plate 5, Fig. 3, to receive plate 1 and flat lower plate 6, the mould being mounted between plates 7, 8 heated by electrical coils. Asbestos sheets 9, 10 are provided between an upper pressing plate 11 and plate 7 and between plate 8 and a vibratable plate 14 carrying a vibrator 15. In operation, pressure is exerted on plate 11 by mechanical or hydraulic means and the plates 5, 6 are heated by the heated plates 7, 8 until the solder melts. The pressure is then reduced and the vibrator actuated for 2 seconds and the pressure increased. In a modification the two aluminium plates are both flat and after the solder has melted, the device vibrated and clamping pressure reduced, a tube is inserted through the melted solder layer and fluid is forced between the plates with increase of clamping pressure to expand the upper plate into the recesses of the mould. The solder foil may be replaced by a hot sprayed layer on at least one plate and the mould plate may be heated inductively. The heat-exchanger may be a refrigerator evaporator.
