Abstract

943,748. Blow-moulding hollow articles. BROCKWAY GLASS CO. Inc. Dec. 30, 1960, No. 44880/60. Heading B5A. A tube of thermoplastic material is extruded downwardly from a chamber 22 having an orifice 26 and a central core comprising a fixed sleeve 28, a concentric sleeve 30, a degating sleeve 32 and a blow tube 34, the sleeves 30, 32 and blow tube 34 being slidable to control the extrusion process. The degating sleeve 32 is protected from thermoplastic material which oozes back between the parts 30 and 32 by a sleeve 40. In operation, with the parts set as in Fig. 2, the extruded tube is that part intended to form the body of the container. After extrusion of a suitable length the degating sleeve is moved slightly downwards so that a thinner tube is extruded which will form the shoulders of the blown article, and finally the blow tube 34 is moved to the position shown in Fig. 6 when the " false neck " part of the tube is extruded, this being later removed from the blown article. Then the degating sleeve 32 is moved downwardly to cut off the extruded tube as in Fig. 6 and the mould parts 51, 52 are closed about the tube to pinch its bottom end. Blowing air is supplied to the blow tube 34 to form the article in the mould, the mould being then opened leaving the article suspended on the blow tube, which is then retracted to remove it. The frusto-conical end of the control sleeve may be irregular so that the extruded tube may be thicker at some points than others, and this may be retracted after extrusion of the " body portion " in order to extrude a circular portion for the neck of the article. An alternative form of nozzle is shown in Fig. 10 where the thickness of the extruded tube may be controlled by the sleeve 80 without complete retraction of the degating sleeve 81 to give a better inside finish to the tube. In the case where articles with a thin neck portion are required, the resultant use of a thin degating sleeve gives a poor inside finish and this is overcome by the arrangement shown in Fig. 10 where the extrusion occurs between the orifice 77 and the bevelled end of the blow tube 82. Specification 932,967 is referred to.
