Abstract

A copolyester, for use as a melt adhesive in the machine lasting of shoes (see Division A3) and having a viscosity of 150-500 poises at 425-500 DEG F. has recurring units of the formula: -O(CH2)2O-OC-R-CO-where R is a phenylene radical or an alkylene radical containing 2-10 carbon atoms, R being 1:4-phenylene in 60-95% of the units. Examples describe the manufacture of copolyester by reacting together dimethyl terephthalate, ethylene glycol and (1)-(4) dimethyl isophthalate and/or dimethyl phthalate; (5) adipic acid (6) sebacic acid.ALSO:In a method for the machine lasting of shoes by applying to one at least of two shoe parts to be joined a hot melt adhesive and then pressing the shoe parts together, the adhesive used is a copolyester having a viscosity of 150-500 power at 425 DEG F.-500 DEG F. and having recurring units of the formula -O(CH2)2-O-CO-R-CO-wherein R is a phenylene radical or an alkylene radical containing 2-10 carbon atoms, R being 1:4- phenylene in from 60-95% of the units. The adhesive may be applied to steamed leather at 500-525 DEG F. either manually with a brush or gun or by a mechanical supply system. Lasting processes in which the adhesive may be used are described in Specifications 654,999, 855,599, 862,213, and 910,675.
