Abstract
943,619. Bookbinding machines. THOMAS NELSON & SONS Ltd., C. C. MUNRO, R. JACK, and H. S. MERSON. Feb. 11, 1960 [Nov. 12, 1958], No. 36384/58. Heading B6A. [Also in Division B8] A book forming and pressing machine includes a pair of endless belts 1, 2 for conveying a succession of cased-in books past heated creaser elements 52 which engage the crease lines of the book covers to partially or wholly dry the glue applied during the casing-in operation, the belts being backed by rigid plates 23, 24, at least one of which is adjustably mounted to apply pressure to the adjacent belt and hence to the books conveyed thereby. The backing plate 23 is movable towards and away from the adjacent run of the endless belt 1, to vary the pressure applied to the cased-in books, by means of a shaft 26 adapted to be rotated by a hand-wheel 29, which drives a plurality of spaced worm driven shafts 27 mounted in brackets 28 fixed to the plate 23. The plate 24 is fixed in position. The endless belts 1, 2 are formed from flexible, inextensible, rubber coated, webbed material and pass around rollers 3, 5 and 4, 6 respectively, the rollers 3, 4 being coupled to an electric motor through reduction gearing. The endless belts are maintained taut by adjusting the positions of rollers 5, 6 in the longitudinal direction. The spacing between the adjacent runs of the endless belts may be varied by adjusting the position of rollers 3, 5 in the transverse direction. Each backing plate 23, 24 has a bar 47 mounted thereon, which carries the heated creaser elements 52 and sets of polished brass rollers 32-35. Each of said rollers has a peripheral flange 37 to engage the crease lines in the cased-in books and each set of rollers is carried by a member 44 slidable in grooves in side pieces 46 depending from the corresponding bar 47. A tension spring 50 extending between the side pieces 46, engages pins 51 screwed into the member 44 to urge the set of rollers into contact with a cased-in book. A pin 49 projecting from the underside of the bar 47 engages a slot in the member 44 to limit its movement. The heated creaser elements comprise bars 56 having heating elements embedded therein and clamped to creaser strips 59 by steel clamps 58. A vertically adjustable platform 64 is provided at the input end of the machine and includes a loaded plate 63 mounted with its top edge level with the flanges on the rollers.
