Abstract

642,395. Bookbinding. SULBY ENGINEERING DEVELOPMENT CO., Ltd. Sept. 3, 1948, No. 23241. [Class 16] A gumming and pasting machine particularly for gumming end papers to book sections comprises a gumming wheel, a reservoir or tank for adhesive which is supplied to the opposite faces of the wheel adjacent its periphery, guiding means for the papers or the like into and out of contact with the gummed surfaces of the wheel so that opposite edges of the papers are coated with adhesive, means for feeding the papers automatically through the machine past the wheel, positioning means for ensuring correct relative position of the papers during gumming and means for pressing the gummed edges of the papers together. A book section 6 and end papers 7 are fed by hand from trays 4, 5 onto deflector plates 9 on either side of a plate 11 in an opening in a cover 3 fitted onto the main frame 1 of the machine, whence they fall onto guides 16 having a central division plate 16a extending to the periphery of the gumming wheel 28. The papers 6, 7 are then aligned and fed forwardly towards the gumming wheel 28 by a pin 15 on an endless belt 13 driven round pulleys 14 one of which may be tensioned by a screw 17. Conveyer belts 18 then grip the papers 6, 7 and pass them past the wheel 28 and to a deflector plate 25 having a delivering runner 26, adjustably secured in a slot, by which the papers are deflected onto a plate 8. The conveyer belts 18 pass along plates 22, 23, the plate 22 being adjustably fixed by a bracket to the main frame 1 and the plate 23 being pressed by leaf springs 24 on a plate 24a adjustably fixed to the frame 1 so that the two plates 22, 23 press the papers 6, 7 firmly together when they have passed the gumming wheel. A spring 61, adjustable by a knob 60 may also be used to adjust the pressure between the belts 18 at the input end. The gumming wheel 28 is detachably mounted on a shaft 29, driven from a pulley 40, supported in a journal 30 having a screwed pin and slot connection with a cover plate 32 for a bath 33 for the adhesive into which the periphery of the wheel 28 extends, the wheel being laterally adjustable to suit different thicknesses of papers 6, 7 by the screwed pins. A reservoir tank 34, with a removable plug 35 for filling, has an opening 36 to a pipe 37 and supplies adhesive to the bath 33 on the vacuum principle to give a constant level in the bath. An axially slidable valve 38 is provided in the pipe 37 to control the supply of adhesive. The reservoir 34, and with it the bath 33 and wheel 28, is vertically adjustably mounted on the main frame 1. A scraper is provided in the bath 33 to remove excess adhesive from the wheel 28. The wheel 28, conveyer belts 18 and endless belt 13 are all operated by a system of pulleys and belts by an electric motor 41, the drives being arranged so that the conveyer belts 18 move faster than the belt 13 so that there is no risk of the pin 15 fouling the papers 6, 7 as they are taken by the conveyer.
