Abstract

<PICT:0943175/C3/1> Formaldehyde polymers having the infrared spectrum of sample A in the accompanying drawing and a weight loss at 160 DEG C. after 60 minutes lower than 1.5% are prepared by polymerizing anhydrous formaldehyde in an anhydrous solvent in the presence of an amino acid. The reaction is preferably carried out at between -15 and +50 DEG C. Specified amino acids include glycine, betaine, asparagine, betaine hydroxide, alanine and para-amino hippuric acid. Specified solvents are toluene and n-heptane. The polymer may be acetylated.
