Abstract
943,073. Refrigerators. GENERAL MOTORS CORPORATION. June 14, 1962 [June 26, 1961], No. 22884/62. Heading F4H. A refrigerator comprises a freezer compartment 14, an evaporator 16 connected to a refrigerant compressor, an air valve 44, and an electric source of heat 30 energizable when the compressor stops. As shown, whenever the evaporator is cold, air leaving the evaporator enters the freezer 14 via opening 42 controlled by damper 44. The damper is controlled by an actuator 46, e.g. a bi-metallic element having one end mounted on the first two passes of the evaporator. During operation of the compressor the evaporator temperature is low enough to cool the element and deflect it sufficiently to open the damper 44. A thermostat 26 stops the compressor when the temperature of the evaporator reaches 0 F. The evaporator then starts to warm up which causes the element 46 to close the damper 44 and prevent relatively warm air entering the freezer so that the temperature of the evaporator can safely rise to cause melting of all frost. A lamp 30 is energized when the compressor is de-energized and the heat from the lamp rises and both helps to increase the circulation of the relatively warm air in the storage compartment 12 and adds heat to the circulating air. The compressor starts again when the evaporator temperature rises above freezing point e.g. 34 F. The lamp is also energized when the refrigerator door is opened.
