734,912. Refrigerators. GENERAL MOTORS CORPORATION. Sept. 4,1953 [Sept. 19, 1952], No. 24452/53. Class 29. In a refrigerator comprising freezer and storage compartments 12, 11 refrigerated by series-connected evaporators 22, 23, the compartment 11 is provided with an electric heater, such as a lamp 67, which is energized upon a predetermined fall of temperature of compartment 11 by a thermostat 77 to prevent excessive cooling of the storage compartment, e.g. in low ambient temperatures. Lamp 67 is also energized when the door 16 is opened by a dooractuated switch 74. To ensure that evaporator 23 defrosts and that a refrigerating cycle follows whenever compartment 12 requires refrigeration, lamp 67 is energized upon a predetermined rise in temperature of freezer compartment 12 by a thermostat 71. When defrosting is completed due to the heat from the lamp, a thermostat 44 on the evaporator 23 actuates a switch 43 to de-energize the lamp and energize the compressor motor 18. In a modification (Fig. 2, not shown), the lamp is remote from the evaporator 23 and is controlled by the door switch 74 and the thermostat 77 only and the thermostats 71, 44 control a defrosting heater in contact with evaporator 23.
