In an indicating device stencils 17 on the curved surface of a pawl-and-ratchet driven drum 12, Fig. 3, are optically projected 28, 34, Fig. 4, on to a viewing screen 37. The side of the drum carries depressions 40, Fig. 3, sensed by a microswitch 38 which controls a slow-to-release relay so that while the drum is moving-in response to stepping pulses applied to a solenoid 23-the projection lamp is not energized. A further depression 47 on the side of the drum is used, in association with a further micro-switch 46, for zeroising the indicator. A circuit is described (Fig. 5 not shown) which uses a number of such indicators controlled by dialled pulses in an airport arrival and departure indicator system.
