Abstract

Polypropylene glycol phosphites are prepared by heating at least one mole of a polypropylene glycol with one mole of a triaryl or trialkyl phosphite. An alkaline catalyst or a diaryl or dialkyl phosphite catalyst may be used. The invention also comprises tris polypropylene glycol phosphites and compounds of formula R1R2R3P where R1 is a polypropylene glycol residue having predominantly the structure HOCH(CH3)CH2 (OCH2CH(CH3))xO where X is an integer of at least one and R2 and R3 are selected from R1, alkoxy and aryloxy. The higher tris polypropylene glycol phosphites can be obtained by reacting tris dipropyleneglycol phosphite with propylene oxide. The phosphites may be incorporated into or added as stabilizers or plasticizers to various resin systems (see Division C3) and may be used as lubricants or lubricant additives, heat transfer fluids, hydraulic fluids or pump fluids.ALSO:Polypropylene glycol phosphites are prepared by heating at least one mole of a polypropylene glycol with one mole of a triaryl or trialkyl phosphite. An alkaline catalyst or a diaryl or dialkyl phosphite catalyst may be used. The invention also comprises tris polypropylene glycol phosphites and compounds of formula R1 R2 R3 P where R1 is a polypropylene glycol residue having predominantly the structure HOCH(CH3)CH2 (OCH2CH(CH3))xO where X is an integer and R2 and R3 are selected from R1, alkoxy and aryloxy. The higher tris poly-propylene glycol phosphites can be obtained by reacting tris dipropylene glycol phosphite with propylene oxide. The polypropylene glycol phosphites may be incorporated by reaction into urethane systems or into epoxy systems, in which case they may be reacted as such or as an ester of a polybasic acid, or may be used to form polyesters. They may also be used as stabilisers or plasticisers for polyether polyurethanes, polyesters or polymethylmethacrylate or as lubricants or lubricant additives, heat transfer fluids, hydraulic fluids or pump fluids.
