Abstract

An oestrogen preparation comprises a rigid solid solution of an oestrogen in a water-soluble or water-miscible substance which is rigid solid at 20 DEG C. and is capable of precipitating the oestrogen in a finely divided form on contact with an aqueous medium. Examples of the latter are polyethylene glycols (4000 or 6000), polyoxyethylene esters or ethers, polyoxyethylene sorbitan esters, and mixtures thereof. One part of oestrogen is used for every 5 to 50 parts of the water-soluble solid. The term "oestrogen" covers natural and synthetic oestrogens and substances having an oestrogen-like action, e.g. oestradiol, stilboestrol, oestrone, oestriol, dienoestrol, ethinyloestradiol, hexoestral, chlorotrianisene or methallenoestril, or an ester thereof, or a mixture of these substances. The solid solution is obtained by rapidly cooling a molten solution of the oestrogen in the water-soluble or water-miscible substance, e.g. by pouring into a pan which is at room temperature. The preparation may be powdered and compressed into pessaries along with suitable adjuvants. The pessary may be made effervescent by incorporating therein an alkaline carbonate or bicarbonate and an organic acid such as citric and tartaric acid antibiotics such as framycetin, polymyxin or streptomycin may be incorporated in the pessaries.
