Abstract

The invention comprises tetraureides of formula: R1NHCONHR111NHCONHRNHCONHR111 NHCONHR11 where R, R1 and R11 are C1-30 hydrocarbon radicals and R111 is a cyclic C6-30 hydrocarbon radical, and their production by heating together R1NH2, R11NH2, H2NRNH2 and R111(NCO)2. Specified R values are phenylene, diphenylene, ethylene, propylene, octylene and octadecylene; specified R1 and R11 values are phenyl, p-tolyl, benzyl, dodecyl, tetradecyl, hexadecyl and octadecyl; specified R111 values are divalent radicals derived from diphenylmethane, 3,31-dimethyl diphenylmethane, 3,31-bitolylene and m-xylylene. The tetraureides are used to prepare grease compositions (see Divisions C3 and C5).ALSO:Grease compositions comprise an oil of lubricating viscosity, e.g. hexa-(4-methyl-2-pentoxy)-disiloxane, poly(methyl)siloxane, poly(methyl-phenyl) siloxane, and polyalkylene oxides such as are prepared by polymerising an alkylene oxide, e.g. propylene oxide, in the presence of water or an alcohol, e.g. ethanol; containing 5-50% of a tetraureide of formula:-R1NHCONHR111NHCONHRNHCONHR111 NHCONHR11 where R, R1 and R11 are C1- 30 hydrocarbon radicals and R111 is a cyclic C6- 30 hydrocarbon radical (see Division C2). The compositions may also contain other grease thickening agents, oiliness agents, extreme pressure agents, oxidation inhibitors, rust inhibitors, corrosion inhibitors, viscosity index improving agents and dyes.ALSO:Grease compositions comprise an oil of lubricating viscosity and 5-50% by weight of a tetraureide of formula R1NHCONHR111NHCONHRNHCONHR111 NHCONHR11, where R, R1 and R11 are C1-30 hydrocarbon radicals and R111 is a cyclic C6-30 hydrocarbon radical (see Division C2). Specified oils are naphthenic-base, paraffin-base and mixed base lubricating oils, other hydrocarbon lubricants, e.g. those derived from coal products, and synthetic oils, such as alkylene polymers (e.g. polymers of propylene and butylene and their mixtures), polyalkylene oxides, carboxylic esters (e.g. from acids such as adipic, azelaic, suberic, sebacic, fumaric, maleic and alkenyl succinic acids and alcohols such as butanol, hexanol, 2-ethylhexanol and pentaerythritol), liquid esters of phosphorus acids, alkyl benzenes, polyphenyls, alkyl biphenyl ethers, silicon compounds (e.g. tetraethyl silicate, tetraisopropyl silicate, hexa-(4-methyl-2-pentoxy) disiloxane, poly(methyl) siloxane and poly(methylphenyl)-siloxane), or combinations of these.
