Abstract

A microbial insecticide for the destruction of insects capable of damaging crops and forests is obtained by cultivating to the sporulation stage a stock of a spore producing bacillus having pathogenic action on insects e.g. Bacillus thuringiensis, B. sotto, B. thuringiensis var. alesti, B. entomocidus var. subtoxicus and B. finitimus, in a medium containing 1 to 2% glucide and 0.06 to 0.1% of assimilable nitrogen, together with traces of mineral compounds providing at least one of the cations calcium, zinc, manganese or magnesium, the glucide being exhausted before the assimilable nitrogen during the cultivation. The cultivation is at 30 DEG C. and the pH is 5.5 to 8.5 and the duration of cultivation is 24 to 48 hours. The source of nitrogen is meat or fish peptones, blood, casein, hydrolysates of soja and peanut cakes, products obtained through the decoction of maize or corn, or mixtures thereof. The glucide may be saccharose, glucose, maltose or dextrin. At the end of the cultivation period, the spores and toxins are centrifuged or filtered off and then dried. Specification 907,030 is referred to.ALSO:A microbial insecticide for the destruction of insects capable of damaging crops and forests is obtained by cultivating to the sporulation stage a stock of a spore producing bacillus having pathogenic action on insects, e.g. Bacillus thuringiensis, B. sotto, B. thuringiensis var. alesti, B. entomocidus var. subtoxicus and B. finitimus (see Division C6). The spores and toxins are centrifuged or filtered from the culture broth and dried. The powder so obtained may be mixed with an inert solid filler or used as a dispersion, suspension or emulsion in water or in an organic liquid. Specification 907,030 is referred to.
