Abstract

An explosive blasting agent comprises an aqueous slurry of an oxidizing salt, a granular water insensitive organic explosive, and mannogalactan as a gelling agent, and also contains a fuzed glassy metallic tetraborate in a concentration, calculated as B2O3, of 2-10% by weight of the mannogalactan. The borate gives a more cohesive final gel, but delays gelling so that the slurry may be more easily pumped, handled, and packaged. The explosive may contain by weight 8-26% water, 15-40% organic explosive, 0.1-2% mannogalactan (e.g. as guar gum or carob seed gum), and 0.002-0.2%, calculated as B2O3, of the tetraborate, the remainder being oxidizing salt. The preferred oxidizing salt is ammonium nitrate, up to 50% of which may be replaced by sodium nitrate; other oxidizing salts referred to are chlorates and perchlorates of sodium and ammonium, and the corresponding potassium salts. Suitable organic explosives are TNT, Composition B (RDX+TNT), smokeless powder (e.g. containing nitrocellulose, nitroglycerine, dinitrotoluene and dibutyl phthalate), PETN, tetryl, RDX and pentolite. Tetraborates of Na, Li, K, Mg, Ca, or Ba may be used, an impure fertilizer grade tetraborate being especially suitable. Other optional additional ingredients are metallic powders, ammonium picrate, and cellulose pulps. Canadian Specification 617,006 is referred to.
