A concrete mixer for fixed or removable location on the platform or chassis of a general-purpose road transport vehicle consists of a unit comprising a non-rotary mixing container having a discharge door at one end, agitating means arranged also to deliver the concrete to the discharge outlet, a prime mover for driving the agitator, and a water tank and spray device for supplying a metered quantity of water. As shown the mixer has a rectangular container 15 of hopper-shaped cross - section having two counter-rotating helical ribbon agitators 20, 21 which circulate the concrete round the container as shown by the arrows in Fig. 3 ; they are driven by an internal-combustion engine 31 and reduction gear-box 33 located in a compartment 30. The container is pivoted at 11 to a frame 12 which can be detachably mounted on the platform A<SP>1</SP> of a vehicle. The container has a charging opening 15a and a discharge aperture 15b closed by a sliding door 40 actuated by a hydraulic ram 41, 41a. The rear end of the container may be elevated above the pivot 11 for discharging, as shown in Fig. 2, by the hydraulic rams 50, 51, discharge taking place over the fixed shoot 42 and the adjustable shoots 43. A pump (not depicted) may supply a metered quantity of water from the tank 54 to the spraypipe 55. The container 15 may have a sectional and detachable wear-resistant lining 13 of rubber, plastic or steel reinforced if necessary by a metal backing. A hydraulic pump for operating the rams may be driven by the engine 31 or by the vehicle engine. Concrete may be raised for discharge by hydraulically driven concrete pumps or bucket elevators in addition to or instead of the helical ribbon conveyor agitators, which may then be replaced by other mixing and agitating devices.
