Abstract

941,843. Carding engines. CARDING SPECIALISTS (CANADA) Ltd. May 14, 1962 [July 20, 1961; Oct. 11, 1961; March 1, 1962], Nos. 26271/61, 36431/61 and 7958/62. Heading D1N. A fibre web is removed from the doffer of a cotton carding machine by a train of stripping rollers that includes a card clothed roller and a bare roller. Preferably, the web travels in a straight line tangential to each roller of the train and is less deeply impaled on each successive roller as it travels from the doffer to the last roller. In addition, the web may be subjected to draft between the first and last rollers. The roller train may consist only of a card clothed roller 34, Fig. 8, and a bare roller 36 which may be one of a pair of pressure rollers that may crush extraneous matters. Another arrangement, Fig. 2, includes a redirecting roller 16 between a card clothed stripping roller 14 and a bare roller 18. The teeth of the stripper roller may be set into or may just touch the teeth of the doffer or there may be a gap of up to .03 inches between the points of the teeth. There may be two or more redirecting rollers in the train and, like the roller 14, the redirecting rollers may be clothed either with flexible wire (fillet) or metallic wire (sawtooth) clothing. Alternatively, the redirecting rollers may be plain surfaced but may have strips of cellulose film stuck to their surfaces at spaced positions or in helical formation. Plain surfaced rollers may be wetted to facilitate the stripping action. The draft applied to the web by the roller train is between 3% and 40%. Cleaner rollers. such as 13, may be provided in co-operation with the doffer and first stripper roller; such cleaner rollers may be made of wood, plastics or metal and are preferably covered with cloth to pick up fibres. Bare rollers may have roughened surfaces. According to the third Provisional Specification, the roller train may comprise a first saw-tooth clothed roller, followed by rollers with smaller saw-tooth clothing, then a knurled roller or rollers, a slightly roughened roller or rollers, and, finally, a smooth roller. According to the second Provisional Specification; the first roller of the train may be plain surfaced, followed by plain surfaced redirecting rollers. The first Provisional Specification states that it may be necessary to blow air into the gap between the first stripper and redirecting rollers so as to cause the web carried by the stripper roller to detach itself on reaching the redirecting rdller. Specification 841, 391 is referred to.
