Abstract

940,895. Milling-cutters. RICHARD LLOYD Ltd. April 4, 1962 [June 22, 1961], No. 22550/61. Heading B3K. A milling cutter comprising a circular body 1 having transverse, peripheral slots 2 is provided with cutting units each comprising a holder having a bifurcated forward end with two jaws adapted to be inserted and fixed within a slot 2 and carrying a readily removable throwaway cutter tip or blade 4 which is clamped against one of the jaws by a wedge 10 engaged between the tip or blade and the other jaw to expand the jaws outwardly against the walls of the slot. The holder 3 consists of a metal block of rectangular cross-section, the block being slotted at 5 to provide two jaws. The slot 5 is closed at the bottom and has a depth which progressively decreases from the front to the rear end where it terminates at the top surface of the holder. The front end of the holder is recessed at 6 to provide two laterally spaced jaws 7, 8. The tip or blade 4 is clamped against the jaw 7 by the wedge 10 which is adapted to be moved further into the recess 6 by a headed screw 11 passing through the wedge and engaging a tapped hole in the inner end of the recess. The underside of the rear portion of the holder is hollowed out at 12 to provide laterally spaced jaws between which a screw-operated wedge 14 engages whereby the said jaws can be spread into frictional engagement with the side of the slot. In a modification the holder has a transverse trapezoidal contour for insertion into suitable slots in the body.
