Abstract

940,882. Disc brakes. FORD MOTOR CO. Ltd. (Ford Motor Co.). Feb. 8, 1961, No. 4664/61. Heading F2E. In order to overcome brake squeal in disc brakes, the brake disc is formed of a hat-shaped configuration comprising a two part construction having a sheet metal stamping which forms the inner flange 34, a cylindrical extension 38 and a radial portion 42 to which a cast iron rim 36 is attached, the rim 36 being formed with a series of circumferentially arranged outwardly extending slots 44 extending through the complete axial thickness of the disc and formed at an angle to the radius of the disc to lag the normal forward direction of rotation of the disc. The brake disc 24 is shown in position in an hydraulically actuated disc brake (Fig. 2). The inner flange 34 is secured to an annular structural piece 22 forming a support for the outer race of ball bearing assembly 18. The rotatable wheel axle 12 has a hub 16 affixed thereto and is rotatable supported by the ball bearing assembly 18. Brake pads 52, 53 are actuated by hydraulic pressure supplied through connection 72 and internal fluid ways 68, 70 in the caliper housing 50 to actuate pistons 60, 62 slidable in axially aligned cylinders in the caliper housing. Pistons 60, 62 are sealed by spring-pressed seals 64, 66. An alternative mechanically applied caliper unit (not shown) is provided to act on the brake disc when lever 104 is applied by connection 102 to the vehicle hand brake. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 842,913.
