Abstract

940,383. Automatic weight control. DUNLOP RUBBER CO. Ltd. April 13, 1960 [April 22, 1959], No.13648/59. Heading G3R. In an apparatus for applying to each side of a sheet of fabric, a rubber or polyvinyl chloride film gauges measure the weight per unit area of the films and that of the coated fabric, both the ratio of the film weights and total weight of the coated fabric are controlled. As shown, a fabric sheet 16 passing between rolls 3, 4 of a calender is coated on each side with a rubber film, the weight per unit area of which is controlled by a nip motor M1, M2 positioning a roll 2, 5. The total weight of the coated sheet is measured by a beta radiation transmission gauge 32, the output of which through an amplifier 33 is fed to a rotor control unit 34, as disclosed in Specification 939, 787 controlling the sense of the rotation of the nip motors and the duration of their energization, in dependence on whether the deviation is outside of inner or outer limits. The weights of the films are measured by back-scatter beta radiation gauges 22, 23. Through amplifiers 24, 25 the outputs from the gauges are fed to a comparator 26 deriving a signal dependent on the ratio of the film weights. The output from the comparator is fed to a further control unit 29 from which is derived signals control the sense and direction of rotation of either nip motor M1 or M2 in dependence of the deviation of the ratio of the film weights outside inner and outer limits. The sense signals from the control units operate contactor units 35, 39 to determine the direction of drive of the nip motors and the duration signals are applied to the contactor units through a switch 30 which is actuated through an amplifier unit 36 by a signal from the control unit 29 so that the nip motors are controlled so as to maintain the total weight between predetermined limits except when a correction of the film weight ratio is necessary. In a modification, the weight of the fabric is measured and the weight of the film between rollers 4, 5 determined by adding the weight of the film between roller 2, 3 to the weight of the fabric and subtracting from the total weight. The output of the gauges is corrected for variation in composition by a back-scatter gauge 28 connected as disclosed in Specifications 846, 094 and 877, 685.
