Abstract
940,061. Spare wheel tyres. DUNLOP RUBBER CO. Ltd. Nov. 19, 1959 [Nov. 22, 1958; April 3, 1959], Nos. 37674/58 and 11340/59. Heading B7C. For use in the event of puncture of a normal vehicle wheel tyre, a pnuematic tyre is moulded so that in the uninflated and unstressed state it has parallel, closely adjacent sidewalls so that there is substantially no interior volume, and the tyre is assembled on a wheel rim, the overall axial width of both the tyre and the rim being less than half that of the inflated unloaded tyre. Figs. 1 and 2 show a tyre having a pair of bead cores 3, 4 serving to anchor two cross-laid reinforcing plies 6, 7 of parallel-cord rayon fabric having a cord angle of 29 to 30 degrees in the uninflated state, Fig. 1, which increases to 36 degrees in the inflated tyre, Fig. 3. The tyre beads may be moulded together as shown to form a tubular tyre, or the tyre may be open beaded as in Fig. 5 used with or without an inner tube. Fig. 8 shows the tyre formed with two beads 37, 38 of different diameters which are clamped together in a wheel rim recess by a detachable side flange 40. Fig. 9 shows a tubular tyre having a single bead core 44 clamped between rim flanges 45, 46, the two reinforcing plies 48, 49 of the tyre having their respective ends 48a, 48b and 49a, 49b overlapped at opposite shoulder regions of the inflated tyre. In an alternative construction, Fig. 12, the single bead core may be dispensed with, the tube being vulcanized directly on to a wheel disc periphery 52 through the medium of hard rubber rings 54, 55. For mounting on the vehicle wheel rim in place of the punctured tyre, the spare tyre has open beads 86, 87, Fig. 17, connected by a diaphragm 84. Fig. 13 shows a spare wheel and tyre assembly 62, 63 of the invention secured to a punctured vehicle wheel and tyre 61, 60 by spacing collars 64 screwed to the wheel fixing studs 66, the spare wheel 62 being bolted to the collars and having a ring 69 thereon to locate with the rim 70 of the vehicle wheel 61. Alternatively the spare wheel may be secured directly on the studs 66 by the wheel securing nuts, at least two of the stud holes provided in the spare wheel being of sufficient diameter to pass over the nuts so that not all the nuts have first to be removed. Subsequently the " passed-over " nuts are removed and either replaced by flanged nuts, or used in conjunction with flanged washers, to complete attachment of the spare wheel.
