Abstract

The invention comprises dithiophoshonic acid esters of the formula:- <FORM:0939946/IV(a)/1> in which R is an alkenyl radical containing at least 3 carbon atoms or an alkyl, chloroalkyl, cycloalkyl or phenylalkenyl radical, R1 is a C1-C4 alkyl radical and R2 is an unsubstituted or substituted aryl radical or an alkyl or cycloalkyl radical containing at least six carbon atoms. They may be obtained by reacting a thionophosphonic acid O-alkyl ester halide R-P(S)(OR1)(Hal) with an alkali metal salt of a mercaptan R2SH or with the free mercaptan in the presence of an acid binding agent. The reaction is preferably carried out in an inert solvent, e.g. an alcohol, acetone, benzene, toluene or in some cases water. Several examples are given and the specified products include the following compounds:-<F\1> The products have insecticidal properties (see Group VI). Specification 819,672 is referred to. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 866,422.ALSO:An insecticidal composition comprises a solid or liquid carrier or diluent and a dithiophosphonic acid ester of the formula <FORM:0939946/VI/1> in which R is an alkenyl radical containing at least 3 carbon atoms or an alkyl, chloroalkyl, cycloalkyl or phenylalkenyl radical, R1 is an alkyl radical containing up to 4 carbon atoms and R2 is an unsubstituted or substituted (e.g. chloro-substituted) aryl radical or an alkyl or cycloalkyl radical containing at least six carbon atoms (see Group IV (b)). Specified carriers or diluents are talc, chalk, bentonite, clay, water (if necessary with an emulsifier), alcohol ketones and liquid hydrocarbons. Known insecticides and/or fertilizers may also be present. Specification 819,672 is referred to. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 866,422.
