A combined sanding and planing machine comprises a housing 1, Fig. 1, having one side wall 6 fitted with a bearing 5 in which can be detachably secured either one end of a shaft 4 supporting a sanding drum 2, Fig. 3, or one end of a shaft 4 supporting a planing unit 3, Fig. 4. Each shaft is connected to a coaxial cartridge spindle 10 adapted to be releasably supported in a bearing bracket 11 on the opposite wall which is formed with a slot 14 opening through an edge of the wall to enable an extension 12 of the spindle to extend through the wall for connection to a source 18 of power. The bearing bracket 11 for the shafts consists of a semi-cylindrical part carried by the wall 15 and a semi-cylindrical cap removably connected to the part by screws 11a. When the cap is removed and a locking screw 7 engaged in the end of the shaft 4 is also removed, the shaft and spindle are axially movable to permit the shaft to be withdrawn from the bearing, and the extension 12 of the spindle is movable along the slot 14 to enable the shaft carrying, say, the sanding drum to be removed and replaced by the shaft carrying the planing unit. The extension 12 of the spindle is driven from an electric motor 18 by a belt 17 which also drives a suction fan for removing dust and chippings, the fan being connected by a pipe 37 to a collecting bag. When the sanding drum is in use, intermediate ground-engaging wheels 23 are lowered by a control 31 moving a yoke 33 about a pivot 34, and the height of the sanding drum is controlled by a vertically-adjustable castor wheel 24 at the rear of the housing. During planing, the wheels 23 are raised and a detachable roller 35, Fig. 4, is fitted to the front of the housing.
