939,681. Hydroxyethyl imidozoles. INSTITUTO LUSO - FARMACO S.a.r.L. Oct. 2, 1961 [July 27, 1961], No. 35561/61. Class 2(3). Hydroxyethyl imidazoles of the general formula where R is a hydrogen atom or a methyl group, one R<SP>1</SP> is a hydrogen atom, the other R' is a hydrogen atom or a nitro group, are prepared by heating the corresponding imidazole to 80 to 160‹C. with ethylene carbonate either in the absence of catalysts or in the presence of an alkaline or an acid catalyst, alkali metal alkoxide and arlysulphonic acids being specified. Excess ethylene carbonate over stoichiometry may be employed to act as solvent. The preferred temperature range is 100 to 145‹C. The examples refer.
