Abstract

939,036. Extruding. LOEWY ENGINEERING CO. Ltd. Nov. 27, 1961 [Nov. 25, 1960], No. 40533/60. Class 83 (4). In a metal extrusion press having separate die and bolster assemblies, these assemblies are each rotatable about spaced apart axes which are parallel to the extrusion stroke. The press, which may be horizontal or vertical, has a platen 10 connected by three columns 11a, 11b, 11c to a main cylinder (not shown). A billet container 12 is axially movable by means of hydraulic units (not shown). Mounted about the column 11a is a rotatable die carrying arm 21 carrying die assemblies 14, 114 at each end; it is rotated by a motor 24 and gears 22, 23. The bolster assembly 18 is mounted at one end of an arm 25 rotated about column 11b by an hydraulic unit 26, 27 pivoted at 28 to a fixed bracket 29. Dotted lines in Fig. 2 indicate the position to which the bolster may be swung for easy access to it. The bolster and/or die carriers may rotate through a full circle, or oscillate. A motor-driven saw 34, for cutting the extruded work from the billet residue is pivotable about column 11b by means of a piston and cylinder unit 36. When extrusion has been completed, the arm 21 is moved axially of the column 11a to allow the saw 34 to enter between the die 14 and bolster 18. The die assembly shown in Fig. 3 comprises a die 15 mounted in a " U "-shaped holder 16, in which is also mounted a first shear plate 17. The bolster 19 has mounted on it a second shearing plate 20. The shearing plates 17, 12 hold knives 33, 32. Thus, instead of the extruded section being cut by means of the saw 34, it may be sheared by relative arcuate movement of the die and bolster. If, for example due to cooling of a billet during extrusion, an unextrudable portion of a billet remains in the billet container, it can be removed. The container 12 is withdrawn and the extruded portion cut from the billet by the saw 34. A horseshoe shaped distance-piece is mounted at 114 on the die arm 21 and swung into the working position. The bolster assembly is swung out, the bolster replaced by a ring of sufficient internal diameter to accommodate the billet, and the bolster carrying arm returned to the working position. The ram then ejects the billet remainder through the distance-piece and into the ring placed on the bolster arm.
