Abstract

939,002. Lathe details. ROLLS-ROYCE Ltd. Jan. 9, 1962 [Feb. 1, 1961], No. 3904/61. Class 83 (3). The position of a lathe tool holder in a direction normal to the work 6 is indicated on a counter 8 actuated by a rod 10 fixed to holder 1 which passes through a casing 7 carrying a follower. Rod 10 has a screw thereon which engages a sleeve 14 through balls 18, the sleeve being connected to a disc 27 by gears 16, 20, 22 and 24. Disc 27 is graduated and lies between four photo-electric cells 28, and four lamps 29. A second stationary disc 30 is secured to a casing 31, and both discs have radial rulings, the pitches of the latter on each disc being slightly different. Cells 28 are connected through electronic circuits to counter 8 so that as disc 27 is rotated by movements of rod 10 and tool-holder 1, light falls upon the cells in succession and the number in the counter is varied. Electronic counter 8 may be replaced by an electromechanical counter, and rod 10 may be a tapered unthreaded rod, or a slotted plate, and follower 14 may be pivotally mounted and geared to a rotatable disc. In a modification, the follower may be linearly movably connected through levers to a linearly movable diffraction grating.
