Abstract

A method for cold working metals is characterized by the combination involving applying to the metal surface a solution of polyvinyl acetate in trichlorethylene, the polyvinyl acetate having an average molecular weight of 30,000 to 70,000, evaporating the trichlorethylene, heating the polyvinyl acetate layer to a temperature above its softening point e.g. 150 DEG -200 DEG C. for 5-10 minutes, applying a lubricant on the polyvinyl acetate layer, subjecting the metal to the desired cold working process, and treating the cold worked object with trichlorethylene to remove the polyvinyl acetate and the lubricant from the metal surface. The solution of polyvinyl acetate is applied by dipping, spraying or rolling. Mineral, animal or vegetable fats and oils or soaps of higher fatty acids, e.g. calcium stearate and aluminium, naphtenate mixed with an oil are used as a lubricant. After the cold working the objects are placed in vapour generated by boiling trichorethylene the vapour condensing on the cold object to dissolve and so remove the plastic coating and lubricant. In an example polished saucepans are manufactured from blanks punched from a sheet of stainless metal the blanks having been dipped in a 10% solution of polyvinyl acetate (molecular weight 60,000) in trichlorethylene. The plastic coating is heat treated at 160 DEG C., coated with a viscid chlorinated paraffin and deep drawn. Finally the coating and lubricant are removed.
