Abstract
<PICT:0938823/III/1> Acetylene is obtained from a C1-C3 hydrocarbon feed by passing through a rotating electric arc, thereby heating the feed to above 1600 DEG C., cooling to not less than 1100 DEG C. within 0,1 second by adding a second hydrocarbon at a temperature below 1100 DEG C. and having a molecular weight at least that of the feed but not more than 150 and quickly quenching the effluent to below 300 DEG C. The feed is preferably methane or propane and the cooling hydrocarbon, which is also pyrolysed, may be methane, propane, butane, toluene, divinylacetylene or gasoline. The final quench is effected with water, preferably within 0,1 second of the arc. In the apparatus shown in the drawing the reaction is effected in the copper cylinder 10 which also forms the anode, the cathode being a central graphite electrode 15. The arc is rotated by a D.C. current passing through the coaxial field coil 31. The feed enters at 11 and passes through distributer 12, the cooling hydrocarbon is introduced through inlets 35 and the water coolant through spray 37.
