Abstract

938,817. Typewriters &c. INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS MACHINES CORPORATION. Feb. 29, 1960 [Feb. 27, 1959], No. 7043/60. Class 100 (4). [Also in Group XXXVIII] A printing apparatus, e.g. receiving signals from a computer, electrostatically transfers particles from a transfer medium to a printreceiving medium by means of selectively energized electrodes between which the two mediums are fed. A transfer medium band 8 having a high dielectric constant is sprayed by a nozzle 11 with particles suspended in a liquid which are given a predetermined charge by an electrode 12. A record medium 1 is fed over rollers 3 adjacent the band 8 where groups of electrodes 14a, 14b and 15 are positioned. A row of seven electrodes are provided in each group transverse to the band 8'and the electrodes of groups 14a, 14b are sequentially pulsed, as the mediums are fed, to transfer the particles to the medium 1. Characters are formed by the electrodes 15 suppressing selectively the discharge of the groups 14a, 14b to prevent transfer of the particles. The particles are pressed by rollers 4, 5 to fix the characters or a heating unit may be used for thermoplastic particles or the particles can be sprayed by a quick-drying lacquer.
