Abstract
938,739. Launching rockets from aircraft. BREVETS AERO-MECANIQUES S.A. Feb. 21, 1961 [March 7, 1960], No. 6281/61. Classes 9 (1) and 9 (2). A cluster of rockets 2 is suspended as in Specification 846,246, each rocket having an electric ignition device comprising a transformer, whose primary and secondary windings are shown at 12, 14, respectively, a primer 15, a switch 9 and a flap 5 rotatable from a rearwardly retracted position to a downward vertical position. In the vertical position the flaps 5 serve as rocket supports and operate switches 9 to form a continuous supply line from a source 6 via switch 7 to the lowest rocket (the first to be launched). The flap of a supporting rocket is caused to retract by the propelling gases of a supported rocket when launched and in the retracted position the supply line is connected via contact 10 to the ignition device. Hence when switch 7 is closed a current flows through the supply line to the lowest rocket, whose flap is retracted, and thence through the primary winding 12 and conductor 13 to the rocket casing, which together with the other rocket casings and the metallic body of the aircraft, are in electrical contact to serve as an earth. According to the invention, there is at this stage insufficient potential difference existing between the transformer windings to ignite the primer, but on breaking the circuit by opening switch 7 a sufficiently high potential is induced in the secondary winding to ignite the primer. The system, therefore, is such that the ignition device of the lowest rocket only is in circuit and two distinct operations of switch 7 are required to fire it, thereby avoiding the possibility of launching more than one rocket at a time. A second embodiment employs the same double action for firing, but the ignition device comprises a condenser and associated rectifiers instead of a transformer. When a rocket is not connected to another rocket the switch 9 automatically short-circuits the primer 15 (see Fig. 3). Specification 738,870 also is referred to.
