Abstract

Synthetic linear polyamides are stabilized against the effects of exposure to heat and oxygen by incorporating therewith during or after manufacture a cobalt chelate compound containing the group <FORM:0938698/IV(a)/1> where X is oxygen or sulphur, R is a hydrogen atom, a hydroxyl group or an alkyl or aryl radical substituted if desired, and in which any remaining valencies of Co are satisfied covalently. An oxy acid of phosphorus or salt thereof may also be present. In the examples, polyhexamethylene adipamide is made in the presence of: - (1) bis-(N:N1-salicylal-1:2-diamino-cyclohexane)-aqua cobalt and (2) a complex from cobalt chloride, ethylene diamine and acetyl acetone. In Example 3, the product of Example (1) is diluted with polyhexamethylene adipamide. Specifications 677,733 and 839,067 are referred to.
