Abstract
In treating blood and/or an aqueous solution of blood solids (hereinafter referred to as blood) to render the solids less soluble and suitable for <PICT:0938583/III/1> <PICT:0938583/III/2> use in adhesives, particles of blood, e.g. in the form of a spray, are mixed with steam and brought, substantially instantaneously, to a temperature between 120 DEG and 220 DEG F. to yield a product which is between 75 and 95%, by weight, insoluble in water, and has a minimum viscosity of 100 centipoises at 25 DEG C. When 165 g. of an aqueous mixture containing 24 g. of the product, computed as dry substance, is mixed with 75 ml. of 1,0 N sodium hydroxide solution and, after 5 minutes, tested in a Brookfield viscometer rotating at 20 r.p.m. In carrying the invention into effect, blood is sprayed into one end of a heat-retaining chamber 30, Figs. 2 and 3, through a fan-shaped spraying nozzle 38 between two converging streams of steam issuing from fan-shaped nozzles 36, 37. The heated blood is collected and moved through the chamber, towards its outlet 46, by a screwconveyer 31 and passed into a homogenizer 47, wherein it is transformed into a semi-fluid paste, which is conveyed, by a screw-conveyer 50, through a cooler 48 and cooled to a temperature below 120 DEG F., preferably below 100 DEG F., as by heat-exchange with a fluid circulating through a surrounding jacket and the hollow screw of the conveyer 50. The cooled paste may then be fed through a centrifugal atomizer into a drier 51, through which a hot gas, such as air, having an inlet temperature between 300 DEG and 700 DEG F. and an outlet temperature between 120 DEG and 350 DEG F., is passed. Alternatively, the paste may be dried in an evacuated chamber or by air at room temperature. An adhesive particularly suitable for use in the manufacture of plywood is prepared by mixing the following, in parts by weight:-powdered, insolubilized blood 338; wood flour 172; sodium silicate 180; aqueous sodium hydroxide (50%) 80; calcium hydroxide (33 1/3 % suspension in water) 156; pine oil 8; water 3,400.
