Abstract

938,458. Vehicle suspensions; hydro-pneumatic shock absorbers. E. KRESS. May 25, 1962, No. 20258/62. Classes 108(2) and 108(3). In a vehicle suspension system two oleopneumatic suspension units 18 connecting an axle 6 with the support structure 2 of the vehicle are mounted with their axes spaced apart from the axle on opposite sides thereof. Each suspension unit 18 includes a cylinder 20 carried by brackets 28, 30 having spindles journalled in sockets 34 which are secured to the support structure 2 and wherein adjusting screws locked by nuts 48 abut plates engaging the spindle ends for adjustment of axle alignment. Within each cylinder 20 is a piston assembly 22 having a ball-jointed end 16 rigidly secured to an anchor 10 carried by the axle 6. Radius rods are connected by rubber bushes and pivot pins 58, 64 to brackets 62 on the support structure 2 and to a bracket 52 arranged on the axle 6 such that the height of the roll centre of the system is approximately level with axes of the pivotal connections between the suspension units 18 and the sockets 34. As shown in Figs. 5A and 5B each piston assembly 22 includes a piston 76 carrying an oil film 80 and defining within the cylinder 20 a chamber 92 which is charged with nitrogen through a valve 74. A hollow piston rod 86 integral with the piston 76 has at its lower end a closure 108 forming a socket for the ball-jointed end 16. A piston 136 within the piston rod 86 forms therein a nitrogen chamber 132 charged through a valve 116 and an oil chamber 134. Surrounding the piston rod 86 is an annular chamber 94 charged with oil through an aperture closed by a plug 105. During compression of the suspension unit 18 oil may pass freely from the chamber 134 to the annular chamber 94 through a ball valve 146 but during extension of the suspension unit oil flow in the opposite direction is restricted by a spring-loaded valve 154 having a stem 160 subject to the pressure in the nitrogen chamber 92. The valve 146 may be lightly biased toward its closed position by a spring or by arranging the ball vertically above its seating (Fig. 6, not shown).
