Abstract
938,087. Measuring unevenness in rails. L. SCHENKIR, and A. KIENER. March 15, 1961, No. 9546/61. Class 105. Apparatus for measuring and recording unevenness in rail surfaces comprises resistive elements 7, 8, 9 which vary in resistance as their length is varied, mechanically connected in parallel with springs 4, 5, 6 associated with wheels 1, 2, 3 of a three-axled vehicle and connected electrically in a bridge circuit which is energized across points 10 and 11. Elements 7 and 9 form a referenee resistance value against which the variations in resistance of element 8 are compared and an output signal which is a measure of the unevenness of the rails is developed across points 12 and 13 and recorded. Elements with an electrical parameter which varies with applied tension or force may replace the elements 7, 8, 9 and with circuit modifications the arrangement can operate on an inductive (Fig. 3, not shown), capacitive or piezo.eleotric principle. In a further single wheel arrangement, Figs. 4a and 4b (not shown), the wheel deflection relative to a seismic mass is recorded and the effect of the unevennesses may be evaluated simultaneously by the use of an accelerometer which measures the acceleration imparted to the wheel and axle in a direction at right angles to the rail.
