Abstract

<PICT:0938084/III/1> A surface is coated with a polyester resin lacquer at 45 DEG to 55 DEG F., said lacquer comprising a polyester resin and a wax dissolved in a volatile solvent. The article may be coated by passing it through a curtain of lacquer falling continuously from a slot in a coating head. On evaporation of the solvent the wax separates out from the polyester resin to form a matt layer on the surface of the resin and the wax layer is removed by sanding after which the surface may be burnished to give a high gloss finish. A suitable apparatus comprises a tank 1 provided with a jacket of cooling coils 2, from which tank lacquer is pumped by pump 3 to coating head 5 provided with a delivery slot of adjustable width from which the lacquer falls in the form of a curtain 6. The refrigerator means 8 cools the coolant liquid e.g. brine, and circulates it through the coils 2 and conduit 9 in coating head 5 to maintain the lacquer in tank 1 and coating head 5 at 45 DEG to 55 DEG F. A collecting trough 7 returns unused lacquer to the tank 1.
