Abstract

<PICT:0937975/IV(a)/1> A new antibiotic, siomycin, is produced by cultivating Streptomyces sioyaensis ATCC 13989 or a siomycin-producing mutant or variant thereof in an aqueous nutrient medium under aerobic conditions. Siomycin is a yellowish white or white crystalline solid darkening at about 200 DEG C. and decomposing at about 255 to 260 DEG C., containing by weight carbon 49,26%, hydrogen 5,40%, nitrogen 14,61%, sulphur 8,35% and oxygen 22,38%, having an optical rotation [a ]33D ­ -90,9 \sB 2 in dioxane (C, 1,017%), showing no maximum in the ultra-violet absorption spectrum and having an infrared absorption spectrum as shown.
