Abstract
937,579. Making contact pins. R. F. OXLEY. Aug. 20, 1962 [Aug. 18, 1961], No. 29936/61. Class 83 (2). [Also in Group XXIII] A method of making metal pins suitable for the formation of wrapped joints comprises extruding a metal strip having a pair of longitudinal ribs opposite one another on opposite sides of the strip, each rib having a face which is at an acute angle to and extends from the surface of the strip and a face perpendicular to the face of the strip and cutting the strip into short lengths perpendicular to its length. A pin 10 of a substantially square cross-section is severed by sawing from an extruded strip 30 having two pairs of longitudinal ribs 38, 39; 34, 35 positioned on opposite sides of the strip. A sawing machine 50 comprises a strip feed stop 51, a spring biased pressure pad 52 and a circular saw 53 reciprocated in a vertical direction by a piston assembly 54 via a linkage 55. The saw has axially tapered teeth and is arranged so that its greatest diameter is adjacent to the cut-off pin. The saw passes through the strip during its downward movement to sever a pin, the strip is indexed to the stop and a further pin severed during the upward pass. In a modification the machine comprises two saws arranged vertically one above the other which alternately sever a pin from the strip which is intermittently indexed to the stop. The pin is inserted into a flanged bush 11 of deformable insulating material, e.g. P.T.F.E., which is positioned in a hole formed in a panel, e.g. an electrical chassis. The barb-like side protrusions 16, 17 formed by the ribs of the extruded strip expand the bush which is thus securely fixed in the panel and which in turn also grips the leading protrusion 16 to retain the pin securely within itself. Wrapped conductor wires are subsequently connected to the ends of the pins.
