Abstract

937,577. Supply systems for discharge lamps. ASSOCIATED ELECTRICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. July 23, 1962 [July 24, 1961], No. 26722/61. Class 38 (4). To prevent operation of a discharge lamp 1 (due to excess supply voltage) before its electrodes 2, 3 have been sufficiently heated, a resistor 15 whose resistance varies inversely with its temperature is connected in series with the secondary winding 7 of the supply transformer 4, a capacitor 14 being connected across this series combination. Upon energization of the primary winding 5 the high resistance of the resistor 15 prevents initiation of the lamp discharge which would normally occur if the supply voltage was high. However passage of current through the circuit comprising members 7, 14, 15 heats up the resistor 15 and lowers its resistance, thus allowing the discharge to commence at a predetermined time after transformer energization. The capacitor 14 may be placed by a heater wire located adjacent the resistor 15. The ballast choke 11 may be generally similar to that of Specification 927,188. Alternatively the lamp discharge may be stabilized by using a supply transformer similar to that of Specification 847,417. The transformer 4 is supplied from a conventional oscillator 6 driven from a D.C. source 10.
