Abstract

A composition for coating paper to make a lithographic printing plate (see Group VIII) comprises 10-60 parts by weight of an oleophilic water-insoluble film-former, 40-90 parts by weight of a non-ionic wetting agent, a volatile organic solvent in which both are soluble, and, optionally, a pigment. The film-former may be a synthetic resin or a cellulose ester or ether, and the wetting agent a long-chain polyether or ether or ester thereof. The compositions used in the examples are: (1) silicone resin, nonyl-phenol-polyethylene glycol ether and toluene; (2-5) silicone resin and polyethyleneoxide-polyoxypropylene wetting agents; (6) linseed oil-modified alkyd resin and nonyl-phenol-polyethylene glycol ether; (7) soy bean oil-modified alkyd resin and nonyl-phenol polyethylene glycol ether; (8) chlorinated paraffin and nonyl-phenol-polyethylene glycol ether; (9) acrylic ester resin and nonyl-phenol-polyethylene glycol ether; (10 and 11) terpene resins and nonyl-phenol-polyethylene glycol ether; (12-14) coumarone-indene resins and nonyl-phenol-polyethylene glycol ether; (15) coconut oil-modified alkyd resin and nonyl-phenolpolyethylene glycol ether; (16 and 17) castor oil-modified alkyd resins and nonyl-phenol-polyethylene glycol ether; (18) vinyltoluenebutadiene resin and nonyl-phenol-polyethylene glycol ether; compositions similar to Examples 6-18 using phenolic resins, epoxy resins and complex hydrocarbon resins with solvents other than toluene; (19) silicone resin, polyalkylene glycol ether and toluene; (20) silicone resin, alkylphenyl ether of polyethylene glycol and toluene; (21) silicone resin, polyoxyethylene sorbitan tristearate and toluene; (22) silicone resin, polyoxyethylene monostearate and toluene; (23) silicone resin, polyoxyethylene propylene glycol monostearate and toluene; (24) silicone resin, polyoxyethylene stearate and toluene; (25) silicone resin, polyethylene glycol ester of resin and toluene; (26 and 27) silicone resin, polyethylene glycol monostearate and acetone; (28) silicone resin, ethylene glycol monostearate and toluene; (29) silicone resin, polyethylene glycol monostearate and acetone; (30-31) silicone resin, polyethylene glycol distearate and acetone; compositions similar to those of Examples 19-31 but using acrylic ester resin in place of the silicone resin; compositions similar to those of Examples 19-31 but using ethyl or methyl alcohol, dioxane, ethyl acetate, butyl acetate, ethylene dichloride or cyclohexanone in place of all or part of the acetone or toluene; (32-35) acetone or toluene or both, silicone resin or acrylic ester resin and polyethylene glycols; (36) compositions as in Examples 1-35 but containing also a fine silica or silica gel; (38) silicone resin, nonyl-phenol-polyethylene glycol ether, silica and toluene; (39 and 40) phenolic resin, nonyl-phenol-polyethylene glycol ether, silica, acetone and methyl-"Cellosolve" (Registered Trade Mark); (41) epoxy resin, nonyl-phenol-polyethylene glycol ether, silica and acetone; (42 and 43) silicone resin, polyethylene glycol monostearates, silica and toluene; (44) silicone resin, methoxy-polyethylene glycol, silica and toluene; and (45) phenolic resin, methoxypolyethylene glycol, silica, acetone and methyl-"Cellosolve".
