937,343. Inking-apparatus. CARL ALLERS ETABLISSEMENT A.S. Jan. 1, 1960 [Jan. 2, 1959], No. 284/59. Class 100 (2). A rotary intaglio printing machine includes means for applying ink to its printing surface, a roller operating on the inked surface as it moves from the ink applying means to force the ink into the cavities of the printing surface, means for applying suction to the zone of operation of the roller to withdraw excess ink, and means to wipe the ink surface after it has passed the roller and as it moves towards an impression zone. Ink is supplied from the pressure side of a circulating system through a connection 6 to an inking head 28 and thence through a narrow passage 28<SP>1</SP> to the printing surface along the whole length of the printing cylinder 1. The ink then. passes under a roller 7 which forces it into the cells of the surface and limits the thickness of the coating, the roller being mounted on arms 24 and being adjustable by screws 27 to vary the thickness of the film. Several rollers in series may be used. Ink removed by the roller and by the subsequent doctor blade 10 is returned to the ink supply through a suction duct 8 at 11 and to pipes 30. Baffles 9 prevent ink from returning round the roller to the printing surface. Tne blade 10 is carried on a hollow component 13 providing the duct 8 and pivotally mounted at 15 on brackets 16, the assembly being retractable to allow fitting and examination of the cylinder 1 by power means comprising pneumatic cylinders 19 carried on brackets 20 which are pivoted at 21 to allow the cylinder to oscillate. Arcuate suction boxes 29 collect ink from the ends of the cylinders.
