Inking apparatus; tripping arrangements.- A machine for proving flexible printing plates comprises a frame F having spaced end portions formed to receive and yet permit of the ready removal therefrom of a rotary plate cylinder 9, a rotatable impression cylinder 14 mounted in position between the end frame portions for co-operation with an inserted plate cylinder 9, and an inking unit 22 including a rotary inking roller 23, the inking unit being insertable within the frame so as to enable the roller 23 to cooperate with and ink the plate, but removable to facilitate inking up of the roller. The end frame components 1 are provided with slots 6 adapted to receive a pair of slidable blocks 7 the inner faces of which support the plate cylinder 9 by means of anti-friction bearings. The blocks 7 are secured in position in the slots 6 by screws 10 and nuts 13. The impression cylinder 14 is permanently mounted in anti-friction bearings 15 and is rotated by a handle 17 on a shaft 20 carrying a gear 19 co-operating with a gear 18 on the shaft of the impression cylinder. The inking unit 22 comprises a pair of arms 24 connected by a cross-member 25 and carrying the inking roller 23. The arms 24 are adapted to engage and to rock about a transverse fulcrum rod 28 secured to the frame components 1. The inking unit is provided with handles 30 so that, after removal, the inking roller 23 may be inked up by rolling it over an ink-coated plate. The inking roller is provided with adjustable rolls 31 arranged to run either on bearers 32 on the ends of the plate cylinder or on the cylinder itself, thereby permitting adjustment of the inking roller relatively to the plate P. The inking roller 23 may be locked in position by means of knurled nuts on the rod 28 which grip the lower ends of the arms 24. For raising the inked plate out of contact with the impression cylinder levers 34, pivoted at 35, are provided. The levers 34 are formed with ends 34a adapted to act on, and lift, the slidable blocks 7. The machine is equipped with a graduated rule 36 secured on pivoted arms 37 for assisting in the positioning of the plate P in its correct position.
