Abstract

937,234. Lubricating; bearings. K. FUJII. Jan. 1, 1960, No. 67/60. Classes 12 (1) and 12 (3). Apparatus for applying lubricant to the rails or wheels of rolling stock comprises oil-coating means pivotally supported on the rolling stock, and engaging the wheel or rail, said means being connected to an oil reservoir. A bracket 4, Fig. 2, is secured to a part 1 of the rolling stock and pivotally carries a member 10 secured to a shaft 7, the angular movement of the shaft being controlled by springs, each connected at one end to the shaft, and at the other end to the bracket 4, the springs acting in opposite directions. An adjustable stop for limiting this movement is provided on the shaft which engages a projection on the bracket 4. The member 10 carries a rotatable disc 11 on which plates 35, 36, are riveted, and secured between the plates is a fibrous material ring 34 which bears on the flange a of the wheel. Oil is supplied from a tank, through a stop-valve in a supply pipe, to a flexible pipe 26, into a passage 23, past an adjustable needle valve 19, into a bore 17 in the member 10. The oil then flows through lateral openings 28 in the disc 11, up to a ball valve 33 to a peripheral groove 30 in the disc and thence to the ring 34. The ball valve 33 is controlled by the centrifugal force produced by the rotation of the disc 11 when the wheel is rotating, and is closed when the wheel flange a is moved away from the rail and due to the setting of the stop 15 the ring 34 is disengaged from the flange a and the disc 11 becomes stationary. In a modification, Fig. 7, the oil flows from the tank through a pipe 26, past an adjustable needle valve 19 into the bore 17, and thence through passages 56, through the bearings 12, past a ball valve 33, through passages 29<SP>1</SP>, 55 and 30<SP>1</SP>, up to a felt ring 34<SP>1</SP> secured to soft synthetic resin plates 35<SP>1</SP>, 35<SP>11</SP> by bolts 49. The ring engaging the wheel or rail may be replaced by two discs of soft synthetic material which are secured to the disc 11 and whose engaging faces are serrated to form a labyrinth passage for the oil. The bearings of the rotating ring 11 are sealed against loss of oil by end caps and seals.
