Abstract

936,949. Measuring electrically. D. E. CROOK. Jan. 15, 1960 [Oct. 16, 1958], No. 33119/58. Class 40 (1). A wire strain gauge for measuring compressive loads between surfaces comprises a flat plate in which are embedded a plurality of lengths of wire arranged in zig-zag formation with the plane of the zig-zag at an angle to the surface of the plate. As shown, the wire 1 is stitched to a sheet of paper 2 in a plurality of parallel zig-zags and the sheet is pleated along lines 5 and 6, Fig. 1, the pleats being trapezoidal in section. The sheet is then embedded in an epoxy resin to form a plate with faces parallel to the bases 8 of the pleats. The plate, with paperpacking sheets and protective steel plates is encased, together with a block 15 containing a dummy gauge wire 14, in a brass or other foil casing. The gauge is insensitive to loads other than those applied perpendicularly to the surface of the plate provided that the zig-zags of the wire meet at an angle of 57¢Œ 5 degrees and the angle that the plane containing the zigzags makes with the surface of the plate is 56¢Œ5 degrees. A conventional bridge circuit for the gauge is mentioned.
