Abstract
936,788. Polarizers. INTERNATIONAL POLAROID CORPORATION. April 4, 1962 [April 25, 1961], No. 12988/62. Class 97 (1). The polarizer comprises an element of photolytically oriented dichroic dye or stain on an unoriented support. In an example, a cellulose triacetate film whose surface was converted to cellulose by alkaline hydrolysis was stained with a dye solution and dried before being exposed to polarized ultra-violet radiation. In that way, the chromophoric groups of the dye molecules lying along an axis parallel to the polarizing plane of the incident radiation were decomposed, while those groups at right-angles to the polarizing plane were unaffected. By successively exposing and shielding different areas to the decomposing radiation, these areas may be given different polarizing axes.
